A Personal Experience

Touch down ... Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I'm here for a facelift and feeling slightly nervous. Was wondering what I let myself in for (even the months of research I'd done before embarking on this didn't stop the nervousness). I'd already had cosmetic surgery in Australia the year before, and I was therefore not "new" to this. However, all that bad press in Australia on the dangers of "cheap" cosmetic surgery did make me wonder.

The Day of the Surgery

For my procedure, I chose Subang Jaya Medical Centre. The admission was First Class ... problem free and all the staff at the hospital speak fluent English. I had met my doctor, Dr Surey, the day before and he called on me again before surgery to see how I was. Wow! I don't remember getting this kind of treatment when I had my surgery done in Australia.  His professionalism made me very confident about the surgery ahead.

Recovery

Post surgery? I woke up feeling fine - no nausea, no pain with a large bandage around my head ... I couldn't wait to see what the outcome was going to look like. . So I sneaked a look in the mirror. Big mistake! I should have stayed away from the mirror.  I should have remembered what I was told ... it will take 1-2 weeks for the initial swelling to disappear, a little longer for the residual swelling. So after the initial panic, and numerous reminders to myself that it will be alright, I opted for some retail therapy.

Accommodation, Shopping & Sightseeing

My chosen hotel, Sunway Lagoon (one of the Sunway Hotel group) was absolutely fabulous. Straight down the lift and into the shopping centre. There were lots of shops, cafes and restaurants ... serving every type of cuisine. I didn't even have to cross the street. And the best part was that I KNEW I wouldn't run into a neighbour, friend or acquaintance whilst I looked terrible. I just went out and enjoyed myself.

Being Overseas

One of the great things about recovering overseas is the fact that you know, that you won't run into a neighbour, friend or acquaintance. So I didn't worry too much about my swollen facial contours. I just went out and enjoyed myself.

What My Friends Say

Today everything looks great ... I'm delighted with the result. My friends (even the ones who had told me I already looked great without the surgery) have commented on how good I look and best of all, I feel great.  Would I do it again? Definitely YES!

If You Are Considering Having Cosmetic Surgery, My Advice Is This;

  • Do it for you. Cosmetic surgery can make you more confident and happy about the way look, but it may not change your situation in life.
  • Find a good plastic and reconstructive surgeon, and make sure you have somebody to care for you after getting out of hospital. And follow the post-surgery instructions.
  • Give it time; the final result may not be evident for several months.
  • Have realistic expectations. After surgery, you will still look like you -only better!

Facelift, Blepharoplasty and Abdominoplasty

I have visited Malaysia twice for cosmetic surgery. On my 1st visit I had a facelift as well as upper & lower eyelid correction and on my 2nd visit had a tummy tuck.  I am thrilled with my results and would have no hesitation in recommending Subang Jaya Medical Centre and Dr Soma.

Dr Soma speaks fluent English and I was very impressed with his bedside manner. After the surgery Dr Soma insisted on several post-operative consultations, just to be sure that I was healing correctly and to confirm that no complications had arisen. And all at no extra cost.

From the moment I arrived Dee managed everything. It makes such a difference to have an expatriate look after you. She totally understood my needs, language, food and shopping requirements but, most important of all, was having her with me to help with all the hospital issues. I was whisked through all the departments with ease and she stayed with me until I was taken to theatre.  She was there to visit me and, after discharge from hospital, Dee kept in touch daily and accompanied me to post operative check ups with my surgeon, by whom I was seen on almost a daily basis.  Nothing was too much to ask and I cannot speak too highly of her service.

The two Dees were wonderful.  It is daunting having surgery in another country and not knowing anyone, however they did everything they could to make my stay as pleasant and comfortable as possible. From the moment I arrived in KL until the moment I left, they made sure I had nothing to worry about.
