Medically-effective Compression Garments

Why should I use a surgical compression garment?

Although not visible, your surgical procedure affected a large section of tissue beneath your skin. Blood vessels carrying oxygen; lymph channels bringing fluid in to tiny to spaces and connective tissue fibres attaching skin to deeper structures -many of these would have been distorted, detached or removed during your surgery.

The result is a large wound your body needs to repair. It must rebuild the oxygen carrying capillaries and restore your lymphatic system so it can carry nutrients to, and waste from your cells. Your body must also reconnect the structures that hold your skin tightly, but flexibly in place. And, if you had liposuction, skin that was stretched to accommodate your previous adipose tissue, will tighten to a smaller, tauter contour.

Faster Wound Healing and Reduced Risk of Complications

Swelling or oedema occurs due to extra blood and lymph trying to find its way to the repair site, and at the same time, the injury site is experiencing impaired drainage, caused by surgical injury to tiny lymph channels and capillaries. The stagnation of accumulated fluids can prevent fresh supplies of oxygen and nutrients from reaching the damaged areas, which, in turn, can slow the healing process, or in rare but severe cases, cause some cells to die.

If accumulations of lymph (seromas) or blood (haematomas) occur, the immune system may not be able to clean these areas completely and infections can result. Occasionally, these accumulated fluids can form clots, which can break loose and obstruct blood flow to other areas of the body; this is also referred to as an embolism, which is an uncommon, but serious complication.

Even if you develop no haematomas or seromas, the total amount of fluid that can become trapped in swollen tissues can be of concern. If too much fluid remains in the tissues rather than returning to the blood, it will cause your heart to pump faster.

Whilst these complications are rare, one way you can proactively reduce the chance of complications occurring, is by wearing a surgical compression garment. By applying pressure on the skin, the flexible compression garment gently squeezes body fluids back toward deeper tissues and into the blood stream, reducing oedema in the affected areas.

An additional advantage of wearing a properly fitted, medically-effective compression garment is that loose skin, when held firmly against the body, is much more likely to heal without sagging.
